Amazon Workforce Reduction Announcement

Amazon is set to reduce approximately 15% of its staff in the People eXperience and Technology (PXT) division, its human resources and internal operations team, according to a report from Fortune. The layoffs are part of a broader strategy for cutting costs and restructuring across various business sectors.

Details of the Layoffs

According to the report, these layoffs are expected to impact several thousand positions worldwide and will be carried out in phases over the coming weeks. The human resources, recruiting, and employee experience teams are projected to be the most affected. This decision was prompted by an internal assessment that highlighted overlapping functions and productivity challenges within Amazon’s corporate structure.

Historical Context and Ongoing Changes

The current layoffs are a continuation of a larger multi-year restructuring effort. Between late 2022 and 2023, Amazon eliminated around 27,000 corporate roles spanning its retail, devices, and cloud sectors. Following this, the company has been actively merging teams to prioritise growth in logistics, AWS, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Comments and Responses

Startup Superb has reached out to Amazon for further comments on the situation. The HR division of Amazon, which consists of over 60,000 employees globally, oversees employee engagement and recruitment for more than 1.5 million workers. In light of the layoffs, the PXT unit will also be undergoing an internal reorganization aimed at consolidating regional teams and simplifying management structures.
