Creator Economy Boost: $1 Billion Fund Announcement

The launch of a $1 billion fund is set to significantly enhance the creator economy, as stated by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This initiative is specifically designed to provide support to digital content creators by offering funding, skill enhancement, and opportunities in global markets.

The upcoming WAVES 2025 summit, scheduled in Mumbai from May 1 to 4, will serve as a platform for creators to produce valuable content, according to the minister. This development is timely, with over 294 million online shoppers in India and more than 4 million influencers now in the country.

Details of the $1 Billion Fund for the Creator Economy

The fund aims to give a significant boost to digital content creators by ensuring they have access to the necessary capital to enhance their skills and take advantage of global market possibilities. Vaishnaw mentioned that the fund is intended to empower energetic creators who are leveraging contemporary technologies.

WAVES 2025: A Platform for High-Value Content Production

WAVES 2025 is a pioneering initiative introduced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, aimed at fostering global collaboration within the media and entertainment (M&E) sector. It comes at a time when the creator economy in India is experiencing rapid growth, supported by increasing internet access and rising disposable incomes.

Growing Influence of Digital Creators

According to Inc42’s ‘Indian Tech Startup Funding Report 2024’, the number of online shoppers in India has surged, making online shopping an essential aspect of everyday life. Various brands across sectors like beauty, food, fashion, and electronics are increasingly collaborating with digital influencers and content creators to reach wider audiences.

Data from influencer intelligence platform Qoruz indicates that India boasts over 4 million influencers. A recent report from tech giant Meta revealed that most Indian online shoppers discovered beauty brands through social media platforms.

Investing in the Future of the Creator Economy

In efforts to further engage with India’s thriving creator economy, Amazon launched two new initiatives last year called ‘Creator University’ and ‘Creator Connect’, aimed specifically at supporting creators.

According to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, India is recognized as the fastest-growing market for video-sharing platforms, leading numerous global trends in the creator economy.

Last December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significance of the creator economy in achieving the goal of a $5 trillion economy. Furthermore, the Indian influencer market, valued at INR 2,344 crore last year, is expected to grow into a INR 3,375 crore opportunity by 2026, as reported by EY.

To further support this sector, last year, the Union Cabinet approved the creation of a National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) dedicated to animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality (AVGC-XR).
