Kabeer Biswas Steps Down from Flipkart, Eyeing BigBasket’s Quick Commerce
Kabeer Biswas has stepped down from his role as Vice President at Flipkart, where he was instrumental in leading the quick commerce initiative known as Flipkart Minutes. In a statement, Flipkart announced that Kunal Gupta, an experienced Vice President within the company, will now take charge of Flipkart Minutes, ensuring a smooth transition in business operations.
Sources from Startup Superb indicate that Biswas is currently in discussions to join BigBasket, where he is likely to oversee the company’s quick commerce segment. One anonymous source noted that discussions are quite advanced and that the new role will focus on leading the grocery giant’s fast delivery services. Reports confirm that BigBasket has already sent an offer letter to Biswas.
Since joining Flipkart in January this year, Biswas aimed to build and expand the company’s ten-minute delivery service. His departure comes in less than a year, marking yet another significant leadership change within Flipkart’s push into new commerce.
Flipkart Minutes was introduced earlier this year to challenge prominent competitors such as Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy’s Instamart. Under Biswas’s guidance, this unit was part of Flipkart’s strategy to broaden its reach beyond traditional e-commerce.
In response to queries from Startup Superb, Biswas indicated that he was not in a position to comment, and BigBasket similarly declined to provide any statements regarding the matter.
Kabeer Biswas co-founded Dunzo in Bengaluru in 2014 and had been at the helm for nearly a decade. The company was once a leader in India’s hyperlocal delivery sector but has faced a myriad of operational and funding hurdles over the past two years, ultimately leading to its closure. Reliance Retail, which invested around $200 million in Dunzo in 2022, has since written off its investment.
