Partnership Under IndiaAI Mission

To further support India’s drive in AI and emerging technologies, Microsoft has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under the IndiaAI Mission. This partnership aims to accelerate the development and adoption of AI while fostering an inclusive and ethical AI ecosystem.

Key initiatives under this partnership include:
– Supporting the IndiaAI Mission Datasets platform by contributing to data collection.
– Generating synthetic data.
– Collaborating with partners like AI4Bharat.

Additionally, both entities plan to establish Centres of Excellence and AI Productivity Labs to promote sustainable and inclusive growth.

Expert Insights

“India’s leadership in AI is being watched around the world, and our partners like RailTel, Apollo Hospitals, Bajaj Finserv, Mahindra Group, and upGrad are instrumental in advancing AI in the country. At Microsoft, we are grateful for the trust our customers across various sectors of the Indian economy place in Microsoft Copilot, our cloud, and AI solutions,” stated Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia. He added, “We are eager to collaborate with the government to extend the benefits of the India AI mission throughout the nation and to democratise access to technology and resources.”

Skill Development Goals

By 2026, Microsoft and IndiaAI set a goal to upskill 500,000 individuals, including:
– Students
– Educators
– Developers
– Government officials
– Women entrepreneurs

As part of this MoU, Microsoft will establish an AI Center of Excellence called “AI Catalysts” aimed at fostering rural AI innovation. This initiative is expected to empower over 100,000 AI innovators and developers through:
– Hackathons
– Community-building initiatives
– An AI marketplace

In addition, “AI Productivity Labs” will be launched in 20 National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) and NIELIT centres across 10 states to provide foundational courses to 20,000 educators.

Sectoral Advancements

The collaboration will also focus on creating AI-enabled solutions across diverse sectors such as:
– Healthcare
– Education
– Accessibility
– Agriculture

This will involve working with startups and social enterprises to drive innovation. Moreover, foundational models that support Indic languages will be enhanced through Microsoft Research (MSR) India, paving the way for new research collaboration opportunities.

Partnerships with Industry Leaders

In addition to its alliance with the Government of India, Microsoft has formed partnerships with notable companies including RailTel, Apollo Hospitals, Bajaj Finserv, Mahindra Group, and upGrad. These collaborations are aimed at helping them leverage Microsoft’s cloud, Copilot, and other AI solutions in their operations.

A recent IDC study commissioned by Microsoft indicates that AI adoption in India surged from 63% in 2023 to 72% in 2024. Furthermore, 79% of local organisations are already monetising AI for productivity, while 66% are utilising it for various functional applications, both figures surpassing global averages.
