These frauds can range from impersonating CEOs to execute wire fraud to producing deceptive hostage videos for extortion. This marks the beginning of a serious challenge in cybercrime.

    Evolution of Deepfake Scams

    Deepfake technology first gained popularity as a form of entertainment, showcasing celebrity face-swapping applications. However, what began as mere amusement has swiftly escalated into a significant cyber threat. Cybercriminals employ complex architectures like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to produce convincing voice, video, and image forgeries.

    As reported by The Wall Street Journal, a notable incident in 2019 involved a UK energy firm that fell victim to a deepfake scheme. Criminals manipulated the CEO’s voice to trick the company into transferring $243,000, marking one of the initial corporate deepfake fraud cases.

    In another instance, CNN reported a deepfake audio recording that surfaced just days prior to a crucial election in Slovakia. This fabricated recording allegedly captured a prominent politician discussing ways to manipulate the election outcome. The misleading content, created and distributed by unethical actors, contained false statements aimed at damaging the candidate’s reputation. This disinformation caused considerable confusion and distrust among voters, casting doubt on the integrity of the electoral process until fact-checkers stepped in to clarify the situation.

    Criminals leverage deepfake technology to imitate the likeness and voice of senior executives, issuing misleading instructions to employees. A notable case in Hong Kong saw a deepfake audio call convincingly mimic a company director, resulting in a theft of $35 million.

    Cyber extortionists are utilizing deepfake videos to create the illusion of individuals in peril, pressuring family members for ransom. U.S. law enforcement uncovered a group that leveraged these fabricated hostage videos to deceive victims’ families. Reports from Fox26 Houston indicate a rise in kidnapping scams, with fraudsters increasingly employing AI to replicate voices or images of loved ones, heightening the emotional manipulation in these schemes.

    Addressing a crowded gathering at TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy exhibited considerable doubt about how AI is being portrayed in India. He remarked, “It seems to have become a trend in India to brand everything as AI. Many standard programs are being promoted as AI.”

    Murthy proceeded to elucidate the two fundamental concepts of AI, cutting through the misconceptions. “Firstly, machine learning involves large-scale correlations that assist in making predictions based on extensive data,” he stated.

    “This is simple machine learning. The second concept is referred to as deep learning. Deep learning mimics the functioning of the human brain,” he added, clarifying the essential elements that set authentic AI apart from basic programming.

    Expanding on deep learning, Murthy indicated that it can handle “unsupervised algorithms,” in contrast to machine learning, which is predominantly data-supervised. “Whereas machine learning mainly deals with supervised algorithms that require substantial data, deep learning uses data to form new branches of programs or create new conditions. It can then make decisions,” he elaborated.

    “Thus, unsupervised data, which employs deep learning and neural networks, possesses significantly more potential to emulate human behaviours effectively. However, what is being labeled as AI today consists of trivial, outdated programs,” Murthy asserted, shattering the misconceptions surrounding AI in India’s technology landscape.

    Meanwhile, Infosys is developing its own AI models, concentrating on Small Language Models (SLM) that utilise both open-source elements and proprietary datasets.     M3 Ultra is the latest and most powerful Mac chip from Apple, showcasing impressive specifications such as a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and state-of-the-art AI functionalities. This processor is specifically crafted for high-performance computing, boasting doubled Neural Engine cores that offer unmatched speed and efficiency for tasks related to AI, machine learning, and content creation.

    Utilising Apple’s innovative UltraFusion technology, the M3 Ultra connects two M3 Max chips through 10,000 high-speed connections, resulting in a unified system-on-a-chip (SoC) that provides exceptional performance and power efficiency.

    Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior VP of Hardware Technologies, expressed that M3 Ultra represents the peak of their scalable system-on-a-chip architecture, specifically designed for users who operate highly threaded and bandwidth-demanding applications.

    The M3 Ultra features a 32-core CPU that includes 24 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores, delivering:

Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy Ravuri, Dhaneesh Jameson, and Tony Jose introduced their venture, SugarStrings.ai, which provides DNA-based health assessments. This genetic analysis, enhanced by machine learning, seeks to unveil diseases stemming from gene mutations. The team aimed for ₹1 crore in exchange for 2.5% equity, thereby valuing their company at ₹40 crore.

    Claims of Enhanced Accuracy

    The founders asserted that while other comparable products boast an accuracy of merely 40%, their solution is significantly more reliable. Nonetheless, certain exaggerated assertions were moderated during the televised segment. Regardless, the presentation left the investors in awe.

    Predicting Health Risks

    The team claimed their offering could pinpoint genetic indicators associated with cancer and heart conditions, potentially allowing for early predictions of these diseases. Azhar Iqubal, co-founder of Inshorts, appeared visibly astonished by these claims.

    Sales Performance and Customer Insights

    Having launched half a year ago, SugarStrings.ai sold only 32 units thus far. Out of these, four customers were indicated as having potential cancer risks, though the founders acknowledged that these predictions could only be verified if those individuals received a subsequent diagnosis. The test is priced at ₹58,000, and when questioned about the process, they clarified that customers are required to conduct the test themselves upon receiving it via courier. This revelation astonished Azhar, who contended that such a high-priced test should ideally be accompanied by professional guidance.

    Concerns from the Sharks

    Aman Gupta expressed reservations regarding accuracy, particularly in a nation where a substantial segment of the population lacks health insurance. He stated, “Samajh nahi aa raha ki yeh genuine hoga ya nahi hoga,” questioning the dependability of the forecasts. He also expressed concerns over the possibility of false positives, remarking, “Meri toh zindagi kharab ho jayegi.”

    Proof of Effectiveness

    Vineeta Singh highlighted that while the test may not be unaffordable for all, there was no substantial evidence to confirm its effectiveness. Ritesh Agarwal mirrored this apprehension, pointing out that the technology is still in its nascent phases within India. Azhar stressed that any significant medical innovation must be supported by solid research, yet the founders did not provide the necessary scientific validation.

    Potential Yet Uncertain

    Kunal Bahl acknowledged the promise of the concept but remained sceptical about its current readiness for market entry. Ultimately, none of the sharks extended an offer, resulting in the founders departing without securing a deal.
