Android 16 Developer Preview 3 Introduces Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock for Pixel Users
Android 16 Developer Preview 3 has simplified the process for Pixel users to unlock their smartphones. This latest update, released last week, features a new function called ‘Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock’, enabling Pixel devices equipped with in-display fingerprint sensors to be unlocked without needing to activate the screen, as reported by Android Authority.
In the past, users were required to use alternatives such as activating the always-on display or the tap-to-wake feature for the in-display fingerprint sensor to function. However, Android 16 DP3 seeks to provide a more streamlined experience.
This new capability can be accessed through Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. Once activated, users simply need to tap the fingerprint sensor while the screen is off. The scanner will light up, authenticate the user’s biometric information, and unlock the device.
The functionality first appeared in December 2024 with Android 16 DP2 but was initially confined to the Pixel 9 series. The latest update now extends this feature to additional Pixel phones featuring in-display fingerprint scanners.
As per the report, the Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock function has been successfully tried out on the Google Pixel 6a. However, it is still uncertain if this feature requires an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor, exclusive to the Pixel 9 series. Previous Pixel models, including the Pixel 6, rely on optical fingerprint readers for biometric verification.
This update is a promising development for Pixel users desiring a more efficient method to unlock their devices. With the feature becoming available on a wider range of models, Google is clearly focused on enhancing user accessibility and convenience with each new update.
As Google persists in refining Android 16 ahead of its official launch, this new fingerprint unlocking method is set to attract users who favour faster and simpler access to their devices. The potential rollout to non-Pixel devices remains uncertain, but currently, Pixel users are experiencing this feature first.
Further details regarding the final release are anticipated in the coming months.
