AI Safety Restrictions: Anthropic’s Firm Stance with the US Department of Defence
AI safety restrictions are the focal point of discussions between Anthropic and the US Department of Defence (DoD). Talks have involved the removal of certain limitations, including those on fully autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. Nevertheless, the AI firm has held its ground, with CEO Dario Amodei conveying that the company cannot ethically comply with these requests in a statement issued on February 26.

Reports indicate that the DoD has cautioned the AI company about the potential cancellation of its $200 million contract, categorising it as a “supply chain risk” if it does not meet their requests. In response, Amodei has emphasised the need for reconsideration, maintaining that their stance remains unchanged.
Anthropic’s Response to DoD Requests
Amodei expressed that threats from the DoD do not influence their position, stating that they cannot ethically agree to these demands. He added that the company’s intention is to continue serving the Department and its warfighters, but only with their two specified safeguards in place.

Anthropic’s commitment to upholding AI safety restrictions stems from its belief that AI could jeopardise rather than uphold democratic values. Their statement clarified that mass domestic surveillance and access to fully autonomous weaponry were not part of the contract with the Department of War.

The company further articulated that the requests made fall “outside the bounds of what today’s technology can safely and reliably do.” They highlighted that easing AI-powered surveillance could endanger fundamental freedoms; simply permitting such surveillance does not guarantee its safety or legality.

Regarding fully autonomous weapons, Anthropic declared that the reliability of frontier AI systems is insufficient for their operation. They refuse to knowingly deliver a product that could place America’s warfighters and civilians in jeopardy.
