According to Jeff Pu, an analyst at GF Securities, Apple’s initial foldables are anticipated to feature an 18.8-inch inner display alongside a 7.8-inch outer screen, with mass production set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026. This timeline suggests that the launch of these innovative devices could occur in late 2026 or potentially in 2027.

This projection comes after previous speculation suggested a production start in mid-2026. Pu emphasizes that the development progress remains robust and confirms that both devices have now reached the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn.

MacBook or iPad: What Will Apple’s Larger Device Be?

Amidst ongoing conjecture regarding whether the larger foldable device will fall under the MacBook or iPad branding, Pu posits that it will likely be a hybrid of both, featuring a fully interactive touchscreen display and compatibility with macOS. Display analyst Ross Young and Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities have echoed similar sentiments about Apple’s efforts toward an 18.8-inch foldable device that takes on a notebook-style format. In contrast, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has described it as a foldable iPad.

The categorization of this device may ultimately hinge on the operating system Apple decides to implement: opting for macOS would integrate it into the Mac range, while choosing iPadOS would associate it with the iPad series. Furthermore, Gurman has pointed out that updates in iOS 19 and macOS 16 are aimed at facilitating the integration of foldable technology and touchscreen Macs, indicating a hybridised future for Apple’s product line.
