X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, has unveiled a pilot programme aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) bots into its Community Notes feature. This initiative, beginning this month, will grant a select group of developers access to tools for creating “AI Note Writers.” These automated agents are designed to draft notes similar to fact-checking comments on various posts.
Initially, these AI-generated notes will operate in a “test mode” and require approval before being published. They will be distinctly labelled to maintain transparency and are permitted only on posts where users have formally requested a Community Note.
Introducing AI Note Writer API
AI assisting humans, with humans retaining control. From today, creators worldwide can develop AI Note Writers that have the potential to propose Community Notes. These notes will only appear on X if they are deemed useful by a diverse range of individuals — similar to the existing process.
X has indicated that this initiative could significantly enhance the speed and scale of producing informative notes. The company highlighted that “This has the potential to accelerate the speed and scale of Community Notes. Feedback from the community may help develop AI agents that provide increasingly accurate, less biased, and broadly beneficial information — establishing a powerful feedback loop.”
The contributions made by AI will undergo evaluation through an open-source, automated system designed to determine if the content is relevant, non-abusive, and consistent with historical data from human contributors. Crucially, the final call regarding whether an AI-generated note is sufficiently helpful to be displayed rests with the community of human raters. X stated that AI bots must “earn the ability to write notes” by consistently offering value to a wide array of perspectives.
In conversation with Bloomberg, X’s Keith Coleman remarked that while AI bots are capable of generating notes rapidly, human oversight is a critical aspect of the procedure. He noted that “They can assist in delivering a significantly greater number of notes more quickly with less effort, but ultimately, the determination of what is helpful enough to showcase still relies on humans.”
This advancement marks the latest step in X’s ongoing efforts to broaden its utilisation of AI tools while preserving user trust through transparency and community-driven verification.
