Animal Communication Translated by AI – Baidu’s Innovative Patent
What if your feline’s meow actually indicated that it was time for food? Or if your dog’s bark signified “please don’t leave me”? Chinese technology giant Baidu is on a mission to turn this concept into reality.
The firm has recently submitted a patent for a system powered by AI, aimed at translating animal vocalisations into human language, as reported by Reuters. The application submitted to the China National Intellectual Property Administration reveals that the system will gather data from an animal’s vocal sounds, behavioural indicators, and physical signals such as heart rate. This information will then be processed through AI to determine an emotional state, which can subsequently be converted into human words.
The ambition behind Baidu’s project is to facilitate more precise and emotionally intelligent communication between humans and their pets.
A spokesperson for Baidu commented to Reuters that considerable interest has been generated by the patent application, although the technology is still in its research phase.
Baidu is significantly investing in AI technology, particularly following the emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company has recently unveiled its Ernie 4.5 Turbo model, claiming performance that aligns with global standards, despite facing challenges in gaining traction within China’s highly competitive AI landscape.
Meanwhile, around the world, other entities are venturing into similar territories. Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) is focusing on the communication methods of sperm whales, while the Earth Species Project, supported by LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman, is also dedicated to interpreting animal language through technological advancements.
The announcement generated considerable excitement on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, with responses ranging from enthusiasm to cautious scepticism. One user noted, “It’s an impressive idea, but the real-world application remains to be seen.”
Should Baidu achieve success, the phrase “talking to your pet” may evolve from a mere expression to a tangible reality.
