Best Apps to Stop Doomscrolling

As doomscrolling becomes increasingly common, many individuals are looking for effective ways to limit their screen time, especially on social media. With a variety of applications available, people can redirect their attention away from endless scrolling. Here are five standout apps designed to help manage and reduce this habit.

1. Minimalist Phone App

This app transforms a user’s phone into a minimalist device focused solely on productivity. It substitutes traditional app icons with a simple, text-based Home Screen. While access to apps is still permitted, the colourful and visually stimulating icons are eliminated, aiding in minimising distractions from notifications and visual stimuli.

The Minimalist app also provides options to block particular applications such as social media, significantly curbing mindless browsing or doomscrolling. Users can rename apps or impose time limits to further control their usage, and the app is accessible to both Android and iOS users.

2. One Sec App

Aimed at managing screen time, the One Sec app encourages users to reduce unconscious social media habits. When an attempt is made to open any social media app, interventions like breathing exercises and quick reflective tasks are activated to interrupt the automatic behaviour.

Customisation options allow users to tailor interruptions, block specific apps after a designated time, or implement full restrictions during focus periods. Progress tracking is available through an informative dashboard, displaying attempts, saved time, and overall progress. The One Sec app is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.

3. Forest App

The Forest app introduces a gamified approach to productivity, assisting users in maintaining focus and minimising distractions. Features include the ability to block social media apps during designated focus hours. Successful completion of set goals allows virtual trees to grow, while breaking the rules results in the tree’s decline, making it a fun way to stay committed to objectives. This app is suitable for short-focus sessions and is available for users on both Android and iOS platforms.

4. Freedom App

Acting as a comprehensive cross-platform app and website blocker, Freedom is designed to enhance productivity by minimising distractions across various devices. Users can curate custom lists of apps and websites to be blocked during focus times.

Notably, the app supports offline work and is capable of blocking desktop applications in addition to online content, functioning seamlessly on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Chrome (via extension). Additionally, Freedom includes ambient focus sounds designed to augment concentration.

5. ScreenZen

ScreenZen serves as a screen time management tool available for Android and iPhone users that restricts access to distracting applications and websites. Users can establish daily limits for specific apps, and when these limits are reached, a pause screen appears, featuring prompts such as “Why am I checking this?” to encourage reflection before reopening.

The app also allows for the limitation of certain features, including YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Advanced controls such as quick unlock options, cooldown timers, notification management, grayscale mode, and website blocking are also included.
