Canva’s Expansion in India: Enhancing Localisation and AI Integration

Canva, a leading global online design platform, is significantly boosting its operations in India, which is now its fourth-largest market globally. With an impressive 666 million designs produced in the country during 2024, Canva is intensifying its focus on localising its offerings, launching AI-powered tools, and strengthening partnerships within the education sector.

Canva’s Growing User Base in India

India has developed into a key user base for Canva, showcasing a vibrant community comprising over 240,000 freelancers, more than 11,000 teachers on Facebook, and upwards of 120 content creators. The Indian audience predominantly favours document types such as presentations, printables, and social media templates, with the platform witnessing the creation of over 139 million presentations in 2024.

Furthermore, India is recognised as one of the top three global markets for the Canva Video and Canva Websites features, with the Photo Background Remover gaining popularity as the leading AI tool utilised in the country.

Localised Content and 2025 Expansion Plans

Aligned with its 2025 expansion strategy, Canva is committed to delivering more localised content. The platform aims to enhance its range of templates and design elements specifically tailored for Indian users. Upcoming additions include:

  • WhatsApp templates to facilitate improved daily communication.
  • Culturally resonant designs for religious celebrations, significant life events, support for small businesses, and social initiatives.
  • A localised homepage available in regional languages, which will make navigation and design creation easier for users across India.

Additionally, Canva will feature trending templates corresponding to Indian seasonal events, including Republic Day, Lohri, and the wedding season.

The Impact of AI on India’s Digital Landscape

According to Canva’s CIO Survey 2024, AI-driven tools are increasingly influential in shaping the digital workspace in India:

  • 93% of Indian CIOs plan to augment their AI investments in 2024.
  • 92% believe that AI significantly enhances workplace productivity.
  • 89% of businesses have already leveraged AI-driven tools for creating visual content.

The growing importance of AI in recruitment has also necessitated the use of digital portfolios. A significant 83% of hiring managers prefer candidates who possess interactive digital portfolios, while 87% of job seekers have employed generative AI to update or produce their resumes.

Reinforcing Canva for Education

Canva is amplifying its Canva for Education initiative, which offers free design resources to K-12 teachers, students, and eligible educational institutions. Thousands of educators and students in India are already utilising these tools to foster creativity and enhance learning experiences.

In 2025, Canva plans to strengthen its collaborations with Indian state education departments to expand the use of Canva’s tools in classrooms, thus ensuring that a greater number of students and teachers can take advantage of visual communication resources.

Expanding Accessibility with Hindi-language Support

To further increase accessibility, Canva is preparing to launch its Hindi-language website in the upcoming months. Designed by local specialists, the Hindi site aims to empower millions of Hindi-speaking educators and businesses, promoting smooth visual communication in their native language.

Based on the diverse requirements of Indian users, Canva has also introduced flexible pricing structures:

  • One-day plan: Available for ₹69.
  • Seven-day plan: Offered at ₹149.
