AI-Powered Search Tool Enhances Netflix Content Discovery
Netflix is currently testing an AI-powered search tool designed to help users discover films and TV shows more efficiently using natural language. This innovative feature caters to specific moods and preferences, aiming to create an intuitive browsing experience on the platform.
According to a report from Bloomberg, this feature is powered by OpenAI and is being trialled with select users on iOS devices in Australia and New Zealand. A representative from Netflix confirmed to The Verge that participation in the test is optional and that expansion into the United States is expected “in the coming weeks and months”. There are no immediate plans to introduce the tool on other platforms.
Enhanced Search Capabilities
This new experimental search tool allows for more specific and expressive queries than traditional methods. Users can input their current mood by typing terms like “sad” or “funny” and receive tailored recommendations from Netflix’s extensive catalogue.
Netflix’s Commitment to User Experience
A spokesperson from Netflix shared with The Verge that “It’s early days for the feature and we’re really in a learn and listen phase for this beta.” This statement reflects the ongoing development and adaptability of the tool based on user feedback.
Netflix has historically utilized artificial intelligence and machine learning to power its recommendation engine, which customises suggestions according to a subscriber’s viewing habits. This new tool represents a significant evolution in how Netflix leverages AI to improve the overall user experience.
Unlike previous feature rollouts that are typically implemented globally, this time Netflix is opting for a cautious, voluntary testing approach. This decision highlights the awareness surrounding AI adoption and its impact on the entertainment industry.
