AI Mode Revolutionises Google Search

At the annual I/O 2025 developer conference, Google showcased a significant enhancement to AI Mode in Search, transforming the traditional query box into a versatile, multimodal assistant. Driven by a specialised version of Gemini 2.5, AI Mode now presents a variety of features designed to change how users interact with information, including capabilities for taking photos and making reservations, all via natural language and visual prompts.

Introduction of Deep Search

Initially launched in the US through Search Labs, AI Mode unveils a more intelligent and comprehensive adaptation of Google’s AI Overviews. This mode incorporates Deep Search, which can perform numerous background queries to generate a detailed expert-style report with proper citations. Google asserts that this advancement enables users to acquire more intricate responses to complex, multi-layered questions.

Real-Time Answers with Search Live

A standout enhancement is Search Live, utilising the user’s camera to provide instant, spoken responses regarding whatever is captured in real-time. Whether it’s identifying famous landmarks or assessing restaurant facades, users can now pose questions in a conversational manner, with the AI delivering feedback as the scene develops.

Agentic Features via Project Mariner

To further connect search with real-world actions, Google is incorporating agentic functionalities into AI Mode through its Project Mariner initiative. These features include making dining reservations, scheduling appointments, and acquiring event tickets. Google is collaborating with platforms such as Ticketmaster, StubHub, Resy, and Vagaro for this capability. Although the AI does not complete the transaction entirely on its own yet, it manages all tasks leading up to the final click, including filling out forms and comparing prices.

Personalised Search Experience

This approach represents a more customised, action-oriented future for Search, as noted by Google in its blog. Additionally, AI Mode will leverage user history and connected Google applications to provide personalised recommendations. Users will have privacy controls to opt out of this contextualisation at any moment.

Enhanced Shopping Functionality

Google is also intensifying its focus on shopping features. AI Mode will now offer visual search outcomes, enabling users to virtually try on clothing via uploaded photos, as well as monitor price fluctuations through AI agents. With access to over 50 billion listings through Google’s Shopping Graph, the platform promises high accuracy, even for complex or vaguely phrased product queries.

Innovative Try-On Feature

The try-on aspect is notably ambitious. By submitting a full-length image, users can visualise how clothing from various retailers would appear on their bodies. Google highlights that this function is powered by a custom AI model specifically calibrated to comprehend body proportions and fabric dynamics.

Future Rollout Plans

Although these new features are presently available only to US users enrolled in Search Labs, Google has confirmed intentions to introduce select functionalities into the core Search experience worldwide in the near future.
