Elon Musk’s initiative to enhance federal workforce efficiency is currently stirring significant debate among various US government entities, notably NASA, the Pentagon, and the US Department of Justice (DOJ), which are actively resisting his recent directive.

Musk, who was appointed by the Trump administration to oversee the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), reached out to more than 2 million federal employees this past Saturday with an email titled, “What did you do last week?” This message required employees to provide five bullet points summarising their achievements from the preceding week and warned that failure to comply would be interpreted as a resignation.

The email immediately provoked backlash from key federal agencies, raising concerns regarding compliance, legal issues, and the risk of revealing sensitive data. NASA, in particular, instructed staff at its Johnson Space Center, Glenn Research Center, and Ames Research Center to “PAUSE” any feedback on the directive until further instructions were provided. A spokesperson for NASA confirmed that the agency is reviewing the directive to offer clarity to its employees shortly.

Government Agency Responses to Musk’s Directive

Similar reactions were observed in other federal agencies. The US Department of Defense (DoD) told its employees to disregard the email, clarifying that performance assessments are handled internally according to their established procedures. The FBI also joined this resistance, with Director Kash Patel stating that the FBI controls all performance review processes through the office of the director. Additionally, the DOJ instructed its staff to delay any responses, citing potential ethical and legal complications.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) initially encouraged its workforce to follow the directive but later reversed its stance, indicating that further clarification would be forthcoming. This sudden change contributed to the increasing anxiety among federal employees already concerned about their job security.

Concerns from Ethical and Legal Experts

Ethical and legal experts have expressed serious concerns regarding Musk’s directive. As an adviser rather than an elected official, Musk lacks the authority to terminate federal employees directly, casting doubt on the legality of his demands. DOJ officials highlighted that adhering to the email could potentially lead to ethics violations, exacerbating an already complex situation.

The ongoing controversy is rooted in the overall objectives of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative spearheaded by Musk under Trump’s mandate aimed at optimising government operations, decreasing public expenditure, and eliminating redundancies.
