Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Online Tools
The Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools is an innovative pilot initiative launched by the Tamil Nadu government. This programme integrates artificial intelligence, robotics, coding, and digital tools into classrooms of government schools. Implemented for the current academic year, it targets students in Classes 6 to 9.
Aim of the Programme
The primary goal is to close the technology gap between private and government schools. The programme ensures that all children, regardless of their socio-economic status, acquire essential skills that will define the future workforce.
Initial Implementation
In its initial phase, 85 government schools in the Coimbatore district have been chosen. This cohort includes 78 middle schools, four high schools, and three higher secondary schools. Approximately 880 advanced lab computers will facilitate the learning sessions. Each classroom is allocated one to two periods weekly, with the complete syllabus expected to be introduced in October, following the quarterly exams.
Resources and Teaching Materials
Specialised bilingual textbooks in both Tamil and English have been created for this initiative, guided by trained teachers in mathematics and science.
Curriculum Highlights
The programme merges foundational computer science with interactive digital tools and AI applications:
- Computer science fundamentals: algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualisation.
- AI applications: text-to-image generation, digital art creation, doodling, translation, animation, and text-to-speech functionality.
- Coding skills: using platforms such as Scratch, Blockly, and Turtle Art, alongside basic HTML and cyber safety education.
- Interactive learning experiences: utilising online resources for science, geography, anatomy, and language studies.
Student Engagement
Teachers have observed that students demonstrate considerable enthusiasm, frequently preferring classes under the TN SPARK initiative over conventional lessons. This approach effectively leverages hi-tech lab resources to enhance problem-solving abilities and digital literacy.
Future Readiness
According to officials, the programme aims not only to educate children about cutting-edge technology but also to equip them for future academic and professional pursuits in an increasingly digital landscape.
