Foxconn to Increase iPhone Production in India to 30 Million Units by 2025
Foxconn, an Apple supplier, is gearing up to significantly enhance its iPhone production in its Indian facilities, with ambitions to assemble as many as 30 million units in 2025, which is over double its production from the previous year, as reported by The Economic Times.
According to sources close to the situation, Foxconn is estimated to have assembled around 12 million iPhones in India during 2024. The Taiwan-based contract manufacturer is currently engaged in limited production trials at its Bengaluru site, signalling the initial phases of a comprehensive manufacturing expansion.
These trial operations are mainly concentrated on determining if the Bengaluru plant can adhere to Apple’s exceptionally stringent quality requirements while achieving high volume output. A source cited by the publication mentioned that these trials are designed to assess preparedness for scaling up and compliance with Apple’s quality standards.
Following the conclusion of these assessments, Foxconn is projected to enter the “revenue build” stage, during which iPhones manufactured in India will be sold commercially, catering to both domestic markets and exports.
The timing is particularly favourable due to supportive policies from the Indian government. Foxconn stands to gain from decreased import duties on smartphone components announced in the Union Budget, aimed at promoting local electronics manufacturing.
Apple, which initiated iPhone production in India in 2017, is progressively recognising the country as a central manufacturing hub. In addition to smartphones, the company is reportedly laying the groundwork for the production of iPads, MacBooks, and AirPods in India. Moreover, Apple is said to be expanding its hiring across local operations to facilitate this transition.
This strategy is part of Apple’s broader initiative to decrease dependence on China amid ongoing geopolitical strains and supply chain challenges.
If Foxconn successfully achieves its ambitious production target of 25 to 30 million units by 2025, India could play a crucial role in the global output of iPhones, thereby enhancing the country’s standing in Apple’s worldwide supply chain.
