Generative AI: Balancing Passion and Pay in India’s Tech Scene

Generative AI: Balancing Passion and Pay in India’s Tech Scene

A software engineer with a robust foundation in electrical engineering and a thriving career in generative AI is pondering the feasibility of merging passion with remuneration in the rapidly changing tech industry in India.

This engineer, a graduate of a prestigious Tier-1 institution with a deep-rooted enthusiasm for robotics and electronics, shared in a recent Reddit post that a lack of concentration during university days led him to accept software positions to secure better financial stability.

The engineer mentioned, “I studied electrical engineering at a Tier-1 institute and was always captivated by robotics and electronics. My academic performance wasn’t strong, which compelled me to seek software jobs for a reasonable salary. After five years, my total compensation stands at 50 LPA alongside ESOPs. Currently, I am a full-stack developer primarily engaged in generative AI applications. However, I wish to transition to machine learning within robotics or possibly delve into FPGA development.”

Despite enjoying financial security, he expressed an interest in moving towards machine learning in robotics or perhaps exploring FPGA (field-programmable gate array) development, fields that align more closely with his original academic pursuits.

He sought guidance from others in the industry, questioning whether careers in robotics and FPGA design could provide salaries on par with lucrative software roles, especially in generative AI.

After his post gained significant attention, fellow Reddit users advised the original poster to remain in his current position.

One user suggested, “Why not start as a hobby? Consider building some robots at home. Since you have a background in electronics, it should be manageable. If you’re willing to take a risk, consider pursuing a master’s degree focused on robotics.”

Another commenter reflected, “As someone working in a low-income job that I’m passionate about, I wouldn’t recommend it. Passion can fade, and though I find joy in my work, corporate pressure often leaves one feeling unfulfilled compared to creating something for oneself.”

A third user remarked, “It’s better to stay in your current role, given your responsibilities and commitments. A package of 50 LPA in India is remarkable! Many would be thrilled to be in your situation. In this era of job uncertainty, focus on saving wisely to achieve your financial independence goals.”
