Apple Wearables with Integrated Cameras Coming in 2027

Apple is gearing up to introduce innovative features in its future AirPods and Apple Watch models, which are anticipated to launch in 2027. Reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo highlight that these advanced devices will significantly reinforce the integration of Apple Intelligence within the company’s hardware ecosystem.

AI-Powered Features with Visual Intelligence

These upcoming wearables are expected to incorporate a range of AI-driven capabilities, including the ability to scan and describe surrounding objects through a Visual Intelligence system, akin to the technology available in the latest iPhones. Although traditional photography or video calling functions like FaceTime are unlikely to feature, the design aims to collect visual data for on-device AI, thereby enhancing intelligent and context-aware experiences.

Specialised Chips for Enhanced Functionality

For the Apple Watch, it has been reported that Apple is engineering a dedicated chip named “Nevis,” which may support a camera either integrated into the display or positioned near the Digital Crown, potentially within a future Apple Watch Ultra. In parallel, a distinct chip known as “Glennie” is in development for the upgraded AirPods. Both of these chips are slated to be complete by 2027, in line with Apple’s anticipated hardware rollout.

Advanced AirPods with Infrared Cameras

The AirPods are set to include infrared cameras that could offer a variety of functionalities. These may enhance spatial audio capabilities when used with devices like the Vision Pro, as well as enable in-air gesture controls that let users operate the device using hand movements. Previously, Kuo indicated that Apple plans to enter mass production of AirPods with infrared cameras by 2026.

Innovative Smart Glasses on the Horizon

Additionally, Gurman previously unveiled that Apple is in the process of developing smart glasses equipped with cameras, microphones, and AI features similar to the Meta Ray-Ban glasses. A new chip inspired by the Apple Watch’s energy-efficient architecture is being designed specifically for these glasses, ensuring longevity while supporting real-time AI applications.

A Future of Immersive User Experience

Although it remains uncertain which specific AirPods or Apple Watch models will feature these camera technologies, the introduction of visual intelligence into Apple’s wearable devices clearly indicates a strategic shift towards offering a more immersive and intelligent user experience. If current development schedules are maintained, 2027 could mark a pivotal year for Apple’s next-generation wearables.
