India’s Space Exploration: A Vision for the Future

India stands at the forefront of space exploration, as expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the Global Space Exploration Conference 2025 in New Delhi. He advocated for a collaborative approach to space, asserting that India’s quest is not about outpacing others but about achieving heights together.

Milestones in India’s Space Journey

Reflecting on India’s remarkable journey, PM Modi recounted the initiation of the space programme with the launch of a small rocket in 1963, igniting the aspirations of 1.4 billion people. He highlighted the historic success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which marked India as the first country to land near the Moon’s south pole. This achievement built on the previous missions, Chandrayaan-1’s discovery of water on the lunar surface and Chandrayaan-2’s provision of high-resolution imagery. He also reaffirmed India’s pioneering status by successfully reaching Mars on its first attempt in 2014.

Robust Launch Capabilities

PM Modi underscored India’s impressive launch capabilities, including the landmark achievement of launching 100 satellites in a single mission. This demonstrates the country’s growing influence in the global space arena.

A Bright Future Ahead

Looking ahead, PM Modi laid out ambitious plans for India’s space future. The Gaganyaan mission, India’s first human spaceflight project, exemplifies the country’s rising aspirations. An Indian astronaut is scheduled to visit the International Space Station as part of a collaborative mission with NASA, occurring in the near future.

By 2035, India aims to have its own space station, named the ‘Bhartiya Antarik Station,’ and has set an even bolder goal to establish an Indian presence on the Moon by 2040, along with planned missions to Mars and Venus.

Empowerment Through Space Technology

Beyond exploration, PM Modi highlighted how space technology positively impacts the lives of Indian citizens. He conveyed that for India, space is fundamentally about exploration and empowerment. Satellites play a crucial role in governance, enhancing livelihoods with initiatives such as fisherman alerts and the Gatishakti platform, while also improving railway safety and weather forecasting.

Encouraging Innovation in the Space Sector

To foster innovation, India has opened up its space sector to private enterprises. This has resulted in the emergence of over 250 space start-ups that are making significant contributions to technological advancements. PM Modi expressed pride in the fact that many of these space missions are being led by women.

A Call for Global Collaboration

In his concluding remarks, PM Modi tied India’s vision for space exploration to the ancient philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which means “the world is one family.” He urged for a worldwide collaboration in the field of space exploration, driven by science and a shared vision for a better future, encouraging the global community to dream, build, and reach for the stars together.
