Rockstar Games has confirmed the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI until 26 May 2026, moving it from its previously scheduled release in fall 2025. The studio expressed regret over this decision, stating that the team requires additional time to fulfil the significant expectations surrounding what is set to be one of the largest entertainment rollouts in history.
Rockstar conveyed in a message to fans, “We sincerely apologise that this is later than anticipated. The enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been incredibly heartening for our entire team. We appreciate your continued support and patience as development continues.”
They further highlighted, “With every game we have launched, our aim has always been to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We trust that you comprehend the need for this additional time to attain the level of excellence you rightfully expect and deserve.”
No new platforms have been confirmed alongside the revised release date, sparking speculation among fans regarding whether the game will be available on PC in addition to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This delay also indicates that Trailer 2 remains unreleased, with fans eagerly awaiting new footage after the debut trailer released in December 2023.
Grand Theft Auto VI will transport players back to a contemporary Vice City, introducing the series’ first female lead, Lucia, in a narrative inspired by the infamous duo, Bonnie and Clyde.
While the postponement may leave some fans disheartened, other game studios could benefit from this shift, as many had scheduled releases around Rockstar’s initial timeline. Titles such as Borderlands 4, Battlefield, Bungie’s Marathon, and Sony’s forthcoming Ghost of Yotei now enjoy a more flexible release window. Additionally, Nintendo is expected to take advantage of this open slot as it gears up for the launch of its next-generation Switch.
However, developers who hurried their timelines to dodge a clash with the original Grand Theft Auto VI release may now find themselves needing to reconfigure their launch strategies.
