Instagram Ends Support for End-to-End Encryption

Instagram, a platform owned by Meta, has declared that it will discontinue end-to-end encryption for Direct Messages (DMs) effective May 8, 2026. This announcement may raise significant privacy issues for users since Meta will gain the ability to scan, moderate, and access chats that were previously safeguarded by end-to-end encryption, ensuring only the sender and recipient could view the content shared.

This decision could lead Instagram users to consider switching to other platforms for private conversations. Furthermore, it potentially encourages users to migrate to WhatsApp, which maintains end-to-end encryption for enhanced user privacy and security.

Instagram E2EE Support to End Soon: Implications for Users

The implementation of end-to-end encryption in Instagram DMs began in 2023 as a voluntary feature, aligned with Meta’s broader initiative to enhance privacy-focused messaging across its platforms. When activated, this feature kept discussions in the DMs section stored on users’ devices, thereby preventing any third party—including Meta—from accessing those conversations.

However, regarding the cessation of E2EE support, a Meta representative indicated that the feature was not widely adopted, which influenced the company to eliminate it from the platform entirely.

Post-removal on May 8, all Instagram DMs will revert to standard encryption. This alters the messaging system such that communications sent between devices can be accessed and viewed by Meta on its servers.

What Happens to Your Existing Encrypted Messages?

Users currently utilising the E2EE feature are advised to download their conversations, including photos, videos, and other media, prior to May 8. These messages are encrypted in a way that differs from standard DMs.

The export option can be accessed through Instagram’s settings within the “Your Activity” section, where users can request a download of their messages and media.

User Privacy Risks

The discontinuation of end-to-end encryption poses a direct threat to user privacy, as Instagram DMs will become accessible. Meta will have the capability to scan these messages for advertising purposes and moderate content, alongside potentially providing data to law enforcement agencies upon receiving a legal request.

Regarding compliance with Indian government regulations, the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 grant the central government the power to request data from companies that store user information.

Users who depend on Instagram DMs for personal, political, or professional discussions, particularly activists and journalists, will face immediate repercussions. Additionally, this change increases the risks associated with breaches and hacks, making server-stored messages more susceptible to vulnerabilities.
