Social Media Ban for Minors in Karnataka
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on March 6 the annual state Budget, introducing a ban on social media for users under 16 years old. The Chief Minister stated that this prohibition aims to mitigate the negative impacts of increasing mobile usage and digital platforms among children.
With this initiative, Karnataka is set to become the first Indian state to officially restrict children’s access to social media. Discussions regarding this policy have been ongoing within the Karnataka government for several months as it considers steps to safeguard minors in the digital landscape. Previously, states like Andhra Pradesh and Goa have also contemplated similar actions.
International Context of the Ban
This decision aligns with a broader global movement, where various governments are contemplating stricter age regulations for social media platforms. Many countries are currently discussing more robust protections for young users navigating the online environment.
Australia’s Example
Australia stands out as a prominent example of restricting social media access for individuals under 16. Users in this age group will face limitations when trying to access platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and X (formerly known as Twitter).
India’s Consideration of Age-Based Regulations
Now, India is also deliberating similar restrictions and age-based regulations. The Economic Survey 2025–26 highlights significant concerns regarding the rapid adoption of smartphones among children and the potential impact on their mental health.
Government’s Position on Online Safety
Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking at the AI Impact Summit 2026, remarked that age-based regulation has now gained acceptance across numerous countries. The Indian government is actively engaging with social media platforms to explore ways to implement appropriate regulations.
