Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: Privacy Issues Emerge in India
Ray-Ban smart glasses, powered by AI from Meta, are preparing for their launch in India. However, the introduction is already facing criticism due to recent modifications in the company’s privacy policies. Just before the official launch in India, Meta has alerted users via email about a new approach to voice interaction storage, which will now occur by default, eliminating the option to opt out of data collection entirely.
Changes to Voice Data Collection
Previously, users had the ability to decline the storage of their voice recordings while using the AI features of the smart glasses. Under the revised policy, this option is removed. Whenever the “Hey Meta” voice assistant is active, voice recordings will be automatically saved. Users do retain the ability to manually delete specific recordings through the device settings.
The communication from Meta states, “Meta AI with camera use is always enabled on your glasses unless you turn off ‘Hey Meta.’ Recordings of your voice are stored by default when using Meta AI and may be used to improve AI at Meta and other Meta products.”
Camera Usage and Data Control
Alongside voice data collection, the updated policy also sets camera usage to be on by default. Any photos or videos captured using the glasses will be saved locally unless the user opts for Meta AI or cloud processing. In such cases, or if the media is shared on Meta-owned platforms like Instagram or Facebook, the content may be uploaded to Meta’s servers for product development purposes.
While Meta asserts that users maintain some level of control over their data, this now relies heavily on deactivating the “Hey Meta” trigger. Doing so disables hands-free AI functionalities, leaving the basic camera and audio capabilities of the smart glasses operational.
Features of Second-Generation Ray-Ban Smart Glasses
The second-gen Ray-Ban smart glasses, released globally in 2023, feature hands-free messaging, real-time translation, phone calls, music playback, and instant media capture. As this product heads into the Indian market, users will need to consider the balance between the conveniences offered by AI and the potential implications for their data privacy.
