Microsoft Leadership Shuffle Optimises Copilot Integration

Microsoft announced a significant leadership change on March 17, 2026. The technology leader is consolidating the engineering teams that support its commercial and consumer Copilot assistants, in light of slower-than-anticipated adoption rates.

Copilot Structure Redefined

The new Copilot system for both commercial and consumer offerings will comprise four essential components: Copilot experience, Copilot platform, Microsoft 365 applications, and AI models. In a recent company blog entry, CEO Satya Nadella remarked that this approach transitions Microsoft from a collection of excellent products to a fully integrated system that is simpler and more effective for customers.

New Executive Appointments

Jacob Andreou, who previously held a position in Microsoft’s artificial intelligence division, has been appointed as executive vice president (EVP) to spearhead the Copilot experience across both commercial and consumer segments.

In this new capacity, he will manage design, product development, growth, and engineering for the Copilot AI assistant, reporting directly to Nadella. Before his tenure at Microsoft, Andreou was senior vice president at Snap, where he was instrumental in the company’s growth from its inception.

Key Leadership Roles in Microsoft 365

Moreover, executives Ryan Roslansky, Perry Clarke, and Charles Lamanna will jointly oversee the Microsoft 365 applications and the Copilot platform, as stated by Nadella.

Focus on Advanced AI Initiatives

This leadership shuffle in AI was implemented to provide Mustafa Suleyman with more time to dedicate to the advancements of new AI technologies. Previously responsible for supervising Copilot-related activities, Suleyman will now be able to concentrate solely on these innovative initiatives.

Suleyman expressed that the upcoming phase of this initiative is to reorganise the company to allow him to devote all of his efforts to Superintelligence projects, aiming to deliver world-class models for Microsoft in the next five years. These models will facilitate the creation of enterprise-tuned frameworks that enhance all Microsoft products.

Superintelligence Unit Overview

In November 2025, Microsoft launched the Superintelligence unit, led by Suleyman. He indicated that developing sophisticated AI models has consistently been his primary focus. While managing the new AI team, Suleyman will continue to play an active role in the daily operations of Microsoft’s broader AI division, which encompasses the Bing search engine.
