Microsoft’s Sovereign Cloud platform has received significant upgrades, aimed at operating in “dark” environments. These enhancements aim to provide reliable infrastructure for executing large AI models, office applications, and cloud services without an internet connection.
The new features will be especially beneficial for government bodies, defence organisations, and sectors that must adhere to stringent security guidelines, operating in secure conditions. With these improvements, Microsoft promises a “full stack” experience for businesses, encompassing both fundamental governance and advanced AI capabilities.
In a recent press release, Microsoft mentioned that clients can maintain seamless operations, safeguard critical workloads, and implement cohesive governance and policy measures while ensuring that data, identities, and operations remain within their sovereignty.
Highlights
Three Upgrades to Microsoft’s Localised Cloud Stack
Azure Local Disconnected Operations (Now Available)
Businesses can now manage essential infrastructure by utilising Azure’s standard governance and policy frameworks without needing cloud connectivity. Microsoft emphasised that this has been specially designed for sovereign, classified, or isolated environments.
Microsoft 365 Local Disconnected
Within a customer’s sovereign perimeter using Azure Local infrastructure, organisations can securely access vital productivity services, such as Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and Skype for Business Server. This capability ensures that teams can continue working effectively, even without cloud access.
Foundry Local with Large AI Model Support
Microsoft has introduced support for large AI models in disconnected settings. This means that organisations can deploy substantial multimodal AI models locally, utilising partner hardware from companies like NVIDIA.
