Oracle Layoffs: Severance Pay Details for Affected Employees

Last week, Oracle initiated layoffs affecting thousands of employees worldwide across various roles and divisions. In India alone, approximately 12,000 employees are reported to have been impacted in this round, marking it as one of the largest reductions in the tech sector in recent history.

All affected personnel were reportedly informed via a 6 AM email on March 31, stating that the company had made the choice to eliminate their roles as part of a larger organisational restructuring. Consequently, that day was designated as their final working day.

While Oracle has not disclosed the specific percentage or number of employees affected by this reduction, those impacted have taken to social media to share their experiences. Numerous individuals also utilized Reddit to discuss Oracle’s severance package for the laid-off workers.

Oracle India’s Severance Pay Explained

Following the news of the Oracle layoffs, the topic drew considerable attention online. Many employees turned to the subreddit r/employeesofOracle to share their experiences, including insights into the severance packages available in India.

As per media reports and discussions on Reddit, the severance pay is determined based on various factors such as tenure, base salary, and ex gratia payments. However, it is essential for employees to meet certain terms and conditions in order to qualify for the full severance amount.

A Reddit user who goes by the handle u/Lavishness897 provided a comprehensive breakdown of the severance package at Oracle’s India Development Centre (IDC) located in Bengaluru:

Details of the Severance Package

– Employees will receive 15 days of base salary for every year of service, along with payment for any unused leave.
– The ex gratia payment consists of an additional 15 days’ salary for each year of service, plus a fixed amount equivalent to 2 months’ salary.
– Additionally, employees will receive 1 month of “gardening leave” salary, which allows them to receive pay during the notice period without the obligation to work.

Finally, employees are to receive Rs. 20,000 designated for insurance.

If this information is accurate, Indian employees may anticipate a total payout of approximately three months and 15 days, inclusive of leave encashment and benefits linked to tenure. However, the final compensation might differ based on individual roles and years of service at the company.

Comparison to Severance Pay for US Employees

In contrast, Oracle’s severance package for its US employees appears to vary slightly. According to a Reddit discussion, employees in the US are expected to receive 4 weeks of base salary for their first year of service. For each subsequent year worked, they will gain an additional week of salary. However, there is a maximum cap of 26 weeks, equating to approximately 6 months in total.
