OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Visits India to Highlight AI Growth
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is currently in India for his second visit, where he had a meeting with Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma. Sharma took a moment to share a photo of the two, captioning it “Sam bh-ai”, a playful nod to the word “bhai”, meaning brother in Hindi, incorporating the hyphenated “AI” into the term.
The snapshot was first shared by Paytm’s official account on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a witty caption: “When VSS asks ChatGPT and Sam Altman decides to answer the prompt in real time.”
Significance of AI in India
Altman’s trip to India serves to illustrate the critical role the country plays for OpenAI. During a fireside chat with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, he pointed out India’s rapidly growing AI ecosystem, which encompasses everything from chip manufacturing to AI models and various applications.
OpenAI’s Expansion in India
According to Altman, “India represents an exceptionally vital market for AI as a whole, and particularly for OpenAI.” He further stated, “It’s our second-largest market, and we have seen a threefold increase in our users here within the past year.” He expressed appreciation for how the country is embracing AI technology and constructing a comprehensive framework, which spans chips, models, and applications.
