Phil Spencer Not Retiring Amid Xbox Restructuring

Phil Spencer, the Xbox chief and now CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has had retirement speculations dismissed by Microsoft. The announcement comes during a week of significant changes within its gaming division. The company reassured that Spencer, who has been at the helm of Xbox since 2014, is not leaving his position “anytime soon”.

Rumours of Spencer’s Departure

The clarification arose following a post from the Call of Duty-focused X account @TheGhostOfHope, which suggested that Spencer would step down after the launch of the next-generation Xbox, with Xbox President Sarah Bond poised to take over. Microsoft wasted no time in providing a response.

“Phil is not retiring anytime soon,” said Kari Perez, head of Xbox communications, in a statement issued to The Verge. Microsoft’s communications lead Frank Shaw also took to X to label the rumour as unfounded.

Significant Job Cuts at Microsoft

The rumour’s emergence coincided with Microsoft announcing the reduction of over 9,000 jobs, representing about four percent of its total workforce. The Xbox division was particularly affected, with several in-house studios experiencing significant layoffs, including King, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Rare, Turn 10 Studios, Halo’s 343 Industries, and ZeniMax Online Studios.

As a result of these cuts, Microsoft scrapped the eagerly awaited Perfect Dark reboot and closed The Initiative, the studio behind it. Additionally, Rare’s Everwild and an undisclosed ZeniMax MMO project were axed, along with several other unannounced ventures within the Xbox brand.

Phil Spencer’s Tenure and Leadership

Phil Spencer is a prominent figure in the gaming industry and has been with Microsoft since 1988. He joined the Xbox division in 2001, overseeing the launches of Xbox Game Pass, various console generations, and Microsoft’s acquisitions of major gaming studios. His appointment as CEO of Microsoft Gaming occurred in 2022.

Spencer’s Acknowledgment of Challenges

In a memo addressed to staff, Spencer recognised the challenging timing of these job cuts, despite the platform’s current achievements.

Spencer stated, “I recognise that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we’re experiencing now is rooted in difficult decisions from our past. We must make the right choices now to ensure ongoing success in the coming years, and a key part of that strategy involves prioritising the best opportunities.”
