Starlink’s Expansion in India: High-Speed Internet Solutions by SpaceX
Starlink, a division of SpaceX, is actively pursuing opportunities to enhance digital connectivity throughout India. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal recently engaged with senior representatives from Starlink during a discussion focused on potential investments and the implementation of advanced connectivity solutions across the nation.
The visiting team featured Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink, and Ryan Goodnight, Senior Director, both of whom are at the forefront of the company’s global expansion efforts. The topics covered included Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite internet technology, its current partnerships both globally and regionally, as well as prospects for strategic investment within India.
Piyush Goyal shared on the social media platform X, stating that he met with the Starlink delegation, highlighting the involvement of Chad Gibbs and Ryan Goodnight. The discussions focused on Starlink’s advanced technology, existing collaborations, and plans for future investments in the Indian market.

The meeting aligns with a growing governmental commitment to enhance digital infrastructure, particularly in remote and underserved regions. Starlink’s network of low-earth orbit satellites aims to tackle last-mile connectivity concerns for areas in India that are currently lacking sufficient internet access.
Although awaiting regulatory approval for comprehensive commercial operations in India, Starlink has showcased a robust interest in the Indian market and has started the groundwork for future deployment efforts.
What is Starlink?
Starlink represents a satellite internet service created by SpaceX, the company established by Elon Musk. Its primary goal is to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband internet to locations around the world, particularly focusing on remote, rural, and underserved regions where conventional broadband options are scarce or absent.
Key Features of Starlink
- Network of satellites: Starlink operates using a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which supply internet directly to user terminals, often referred to as “Starlink dishes.”
- Global coverage: The service is functioning in numerous countries and is consistently aiming to widen its coverage area and enhance capacity.
- Performance: Users can anticipate download speeds between 50 Mbps and exceeding 250 Mbps, with latency as minimal as 20-40 ms, varying by location and network conditions.
- Target users: Starlink is particularly beneficial for rural households, emergency services, maritime applications, and in-flight internet connectivity.
The service requires users to obtain a Starlink kit, which consists of a satellite dish, a mounting tripod, and a Wi-Fi router, enabling them to connect to the overhead Starlink satellites for internet access.
