Porsche is poised to lead the way in the automotive industry with its introduction of wireless charging for electric vehicles, starting with the all-electric Cayenne. This innovative technology will make its debut at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich next week, prior to the Cayenne EV’s launch later this year.
The cutting-edge inductive charging system is designed to eliminate the need for cumbersome cables, providing a more user-friendly method for owners to charge their vehicles at home. The installation process is quite simple: a 50-kilogram ground plate, connected to the household electrical system, is placed in a garage or driveway. A receiver plate, embedded in the Cayenne’s underbody, aligns with the charging plate when the vehicle is parked. Once perfectly positioned, energy is transferred using a magnetic field, akin to the wireless charging technology used with smartphones.
This system offers a charging capability of up to 11 kW with approximately 90% efficiency, competing effectively with traditional wired AC charging. The ground plate is designed to be air-cooled and can function in a variety of temperatures, ranging from -40 to 50 degrees Celsius. Porsche has integrated multiple safety features, which include motion sensors, object detection, and a convenient pause button.
Charging management is facilitated through the My Porsche app, which allows for remote software updates, scheduled charging, and battery preconditioning. Additionally, the Cayenne EV lowers itself slightly to ensure optimal alignment with the charging pad, maximising efficiency.
Michael Steiner, who serves as Porsche’s board member for development, remarked that ease of use, daily applicability, and robust charging infrastructure are critical for the acceptance of electric transportation. He expressed pride in the fact that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche, emphasising that home charging for electric vehicles has never been more straightforward and convenient.
Though BMW trialled a comparable solution in 2019, that initiative did not reach mass production. Porsche is now making history by offering wireless charging as an option on a production electric vehicle. However, interested buyers must choose this feature at the time of purchase, as retrofitting to existing models will not be possible.
The Cayenne EV is expected to launch later this year, while the ground plate will be available for purchase in 2026 through Porsche Centres and online. Pricing details for the system have yet to be disclosed, but it is anticipated to carry a premium price tag.
