Overview of the Snapdragon Ride Pilot System

The Snapdragon Ride Pilot is constructed on Qualcomm’s advanced Snapdragon Ride system-on-chips, enhanced by a software stack developed collaboratively to provide an array of driver assistance and automated driving capabilities. These range from fundamental safety features to advanced Level 2+ navigation both on highways and urban settings.

Global Validation and Expansion

The system has undergone validation in over 60 countries and aims for expansion into more than 100 by 2026. It will also be available for other automotive manufacturers and tier-1 suppliers globally.

Development Contributions

A team of more than 1,400 experts from a diverse range of countries, such as Germany, the United States, Sweden, Romania, and the BMW AD Test Centre in the Czech Republic, played a crucial role in its development.

Key Features of Snapdragon Ride Pilot

The Snapdragon Ride Pilot integrates a perception stack from Qualcomm, complemented by a co-developed drive policy engine in partnership with BMW. Key functionalities include:

  • Object Detection
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Parking Assistance
  • Lane Recognition
  • Driver Monitoring

This system also merges radar and camera inputs to improve situational awareness and minimise latency in intricate driving situations.

Safety Standards and Over-the-Air Updates

Emphasising safety, the system meets international regulations such as NCAP, FMVSS127, and DCAS, while also focusing on cybersecurity and functionality safety. It supports over-the-air updates, allowing the system to adapt and improve based on data collected from global vehicle fleets.

Automated Driving Features in BMW iX3

The BMW iX3 utilises the automated driving system to offer features like contextual lane changes, a highway assistant for hands-free driving on permitted roads, and AI-driven parking assistance. Additionally, it is equipped with Qualcomm’s V2X 200 chipset, facilitating vehicle-to-everything communication to enhance safety by recognising hazards beyond the driver’s view.

Statements from Leaders

Nakul Duggal, Group GM of Automotive and Industrial C Embedded IoT at Qualcomm Technologies, stated that the collaboration with BMW’s engineering team has led to a transformative system, now available to provide safety and comfort benefits from automated driving to consumers worldwide.

Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President of Development Driving Experience at BMW Group, highlighted that the philosophy behind BMW’s ADAS focuses on being smart, symbiotic, and safe, with the new BMW iX3 delivering these features on an unprecedented scale.

Advanced Central Computer

The central computer powering the system is referred to by BMW as the “Superbrain of Automated Driving”, boasting 20 times the processing power of its predecessor. It utilises high-resolution cameras, radar sensors, and GNSS localisation for dependable navigation and safety.

Collaborative Vision for Intelligent Mobility

Both companies view their collaboration as a pivotal advancement in the realm of intelligent mobility, striving to make automated driving more accessible in the coming years.
