Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 3: A New Era in Smartphone Chipset Technology

Qualcomm is believed to be on the verge of a breakthrough in smartphone chipset innovation with the imminent introduction of its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite 3 processors, which are rumoured to be manufactured using an advanced 2nm process. This renowned US-based chip manufacturer is reportedly developing two distinct chipsets within this framework, namely SM8950 and SM8945, with their launch anticipated in 2026.

Details of the Snapdragon 8 Elite 3 Series

According to insights from a known tipster, Digital Chat Station, who relayed the information via the Chinese social media platform Weibo, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 3 is poised to be Qualcomm’s flagship chipset designed for high-end smartphones. The SM8950 variant is expected to directly follow the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, offering improved performance, enhanced energy efficiency, and sophisticated AI capabilities.

Strategic Production Approach

To effectively meet the production demands for its premier processors, Qualcomm is reportedly adopting a dual-sourcing strategy. Reports indicate that the company intends to partner with both TSMC and Samsung Foundry for the manufacturing of these new chipsets, a strategic maneuver aimed at fortifying supply chains while optimising production costs.

Understanding the SM8945 Model

The second version, SM8945, is anticipated to be a less robust variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite 3 but will still utilise the 2nm manufacturing process. In order to distinguish between the two chipsets, Qualcomm may consider underclocking the GPU cores or implementing a less powerful GPU in the SM8945 model, offering a more economically viable option for smartphone manufacturers in the process.

Competitive Landscape: Qualcomm Vs. Apple

Qualcomm’s leap into the 2nm domain is likely a strategy to preserve its competitive advantage against Apple, which is also projected to unveil its own 2nm chip, the A20 Pro, in 2026. WCCFTech reports that Apple will be the first to leverage TSMC’s N2 process technology, an innovation expected to deliver considerable gains in both performance and energy efficiency, owing to its nanosheet transistor design.

Apple’s forthcoming A20 Pro chipset is set to be the powerhouse behind the iPhone 18 series, heightening the competition between Qualcomm and Apple as both companies endeavour to redefine the parameters of semiconductor technology.
