MediaTek’s 2-Nanometre Chip Milestone at Computex 2025

MediaTek has made headlines at Computex 2025, proudly announcing the upcoming release of its first 2-nanometre chip this September. This development signifies a remarkable advancement from the existing 3nm technology and establishes MediaTek as a frontrunner in the domain of next-generation, high-performance, low-power chipsets.

Insights from MediaTek’s Leadership

During a keynote address, MediaTek’s Vice Chairman and CEO Rick Tsai outlined the features of the soon-to-be-released chip, characterising it as a “high-volume” custom ASIC. This innovative chip is expected to extend beyond conventional smartphone functionalities. Manufactured by TSMC, the new chip is anticipated to provide a 15% enhancement in performance and a 25% increase in power efficiency compared to the prior generation.

Advanced Design Focused on AI

While specific details remain confidential, the 2nm chipset is engineered with artificial intelligence at its foundation. This functionality will facilitate sophisticated machine learning and real-time AI inference, empowering cutting-edge applications such as self-driving vehicles, immediate language translation, and dynamic voice interaction. Furthermore, the design aims to improve battery longevity while decreasing energy consumption.

A Path Forward with AI and IoT Technology

As part of its comprehensive AI-driven strategy, MediaTek disclosed its collaboration with developers on nearly 250 AI models, including Gemini, DeepSeek, and LLaMA. Additionally, over 100 models focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) are currently under development, highlighting the company’s aspirations across industrial, enterprise, and consumer domains.

The Future of 6G and AI Integration

Tsai emphasised that artificial intelligence will play a crucial role in the future landscape of 6G technology, positioning MediaTek to be at the forefront of this evolution. He stated that “6G technology will come equipped with AI assistance, and MediaTek will be well-positioned to introduce 6G capabilities worldwide.”

With its inaugural 2nm chip ready to begin production later this year, MediaTek is not only pushing the limits of semiconductor technology but is also establishing the foundations for a future interconnected by AI and 6G.
