Apple Appoints Sabih Khan as New Chief Operating Officer
Apple has appointed longtime executive Sabih Khan as its new Chief Operating Officer, a significant shift in the company’s leadership as he takes over from Jeff Williams.
Khan, who has dedicated thirty years to Apple and is currently the Senior Vice President of Operations, is set to officially take on the COO position later this month. His elevation follows Williams’ decision to retire at the end of the year after a remarkable career that has notably influenced Apple’s global supply chain, design outlook, and health technology strategies.
Tim Cook Praises Jeff Williams
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, commented, “Jeff and I have worked together for many years, and Apple owes much of its success to him. He has built one of the most reputable global supply chains; launched the Apple Watch and guided its evolution; crafted Apple’s health initiatives; and led our exceptional design team with immense wisdom, compassion, and commitment. I am eternally thankful for his many contributions to Apple and for his steadfast friendship. Jeff’s legacy is reflected in the incredible team he has assembled, and although he will be greatly missed, he leaves a promising future in capable hands.”
Sabih Khan: A Visionary Leader
Tim Cook also stated, “Sabih is an outstanding strategist and has been a key figure in forming Apple’s supply chain. Within his role overseeing this area, he has driven the adoption of innovative manufacturing technologies, managed the growth of Apple’s manufacturing presence in the United States, and ensured our agility in the face of global challenges. His commitment to environmental sustainability has seen Apple reduce its carbon footprint by over 60 percent. Most importantly, Sabih approaches leadership with integrity and values, which I am confident will make him an exceptional Chief Operating Officer.”
Khan’s Background and Achievements
Khan initially joined Apple’s procurement team in 1995, having previously worked as an applications development engineer and key account technical leader at GE Plastics. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
As Senior Vice President of Operations since 2019, Khan has been pivotal in managing Apple’s global supply chain, encompassing product quality, planning, logistics, and environmental projects. He has been instrumental in advancing the company’s supplier responsibility programmes, centred on worker education and environmentally friendly manufacturing practices.
Transition of Leadership
Jeff Williams, who will continue reporting to CEO Tim Cook until his retirement, will maintain oversight of the Apple Watch and the design team for the time being. Once Williams departs, the design team will report directly to Cook.
Williams has played a significant role in the development of Apple’s supply chain infrastructure, extending it across China, India, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the US. He was vital in the launches of both the iPod and iPhone, as well as leading the Apple Watch project more than ten years ago. His vision has also significantly influenced Apple’s healthcare strategy, incorporating features that enable users to monitor their health and receive early notifications for medical care.
“I have a profound affection for Apple,” stated Williams. “Collaborating with such remarkable individuals at this company has been an unparalleled experience, and I cannot thank Tim enough for the chance, his inspiring leadership, and our enduring friendship. June marked my 27th anniversary with Apple and my 40th in the industry. Starting next year, I intend to spend more time with family and friends, including five grandchildren and more on the way. Working closely with Sabih for 27 years has been a pleasure, and I consider him to be the most skilled operations executive globally. I have complete confidence in Apple’s future with him in this role.”
