Samsung Develops Image-to-Video AI Features for Future Smartphones

Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that transforms still images into dynamic short videos. Multiple sources, including tipster PandaFlashPro on X (previously Twitter), indicate that the company is working on an image-to-video generation tool that may soon integrate into its Galaxy AI suite.

Image-to-Video Generation Tool in Development

This innovative tool aims to utilise AI to analyse a single image from the user’s gallery and subsequently create a brief video that incorporates motion. While specific technical aspects are yet to be disclosed, insiders suggest that this feature could debut with the anticipated One UI 8.0 update. This addition would enhance the multimodal capabilities of Galaxy AI, which currently supports generating images from both text and image inputs, yet lacks any native video generation functionalities.

Recent Trends in the Smartphone Industry

The leak coincides with recent advancements within the smartphone sector. Just a few days ago, Honor revealed a comparable AI-driven tool for its new Honor 400 Pro smartphone. This feature, utilising Google’s Veo 2 model, can produce a five-second video from a single image. Although it begins as a free offering, there are plans to introduce a subscription model in the future.

Samsung’s Enhanced Capabilities in AI

Samsung’s strategy could present a more advanced solution. The company already employs Google’s Gemini AI as the default assistant across Galaxy devices, and many of its AI functionalities, including text-to-image generation, are powered by Google’s technology. While confirmation is pending, there is considerable speculation that Samsung might utilise Veo 2 or a similar technology from Google for its image-to-video tool.

Expected Launch Timeline

Though there is no official announcement regarding the feature’s release, it is notable that Samsung previously introduced Drawing Assist—an AI feature designed to refine rough sketches into detailed artwork—alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6. This has led to speculation that the image-to-video tool might debut with the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is anticipated to be unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in July.

Subscription Model Uncertainty

The fate of whether this feature will be offered for free or require a subscription remains unknown. However, if Samsung progresses with this technology, it could greatly enhance the appeal of Galaxy AI and solidify Samsung’s position in the AI-powered smartphone market.
