Samsung’s Tri-Fold Smartphone: A New Era in Foldables
Samsung has officially announced its intention to unveil a tri-fold smartphone by the close of 2025, marking a major advancement in foldable device technology. This confirmation comes from TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile at Samsung Electronics, following the recent Galaxy Unpacked event in July, where new models including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, and Flip 7 FE were presented.
TM Roh’s Insights on the Tri-Fold Smartphone
Speaking to the press after the event, TM Roh remarked that the team is diligently working on a tri-fold smartphone with the aim of launching it by the end of this year. He emphasised that the priority lies in ensuring the device aligns with Samsung’s high standards for quality and functionality. While the official name is yet to be decided, Roh mentioned that this will be finalised as the launch approaches and the product comes closer to completion.
Preparations for Mass Production
An unnamed executive from Samsung indicated to Android Authority that the tri-fold device is already being readied for mass production. Currently, the company is assessing consumer interest in this innovative form factor.
Specifications and Features of the Galaxy G Fold
While Samsung has not yet revealed official specs or images, leaks hint that the device may feature an OLED display measuring between 9.96 inches and 10 inches when fully expanded, alongside a secondary display of 6.54 inches when folded. The tri-fold phone is anticipated to fold inward twice, creating a Z-like shape when opened. It is also expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, along with a silicon-carbon battery to enhance efficiency.
Pricing and Availability
Initial reports suggest a significant price point, potentially exceeding $2,900 (~₹2.49 lakh). Samsung is reportedly planning a limited launch, with the device first available in South Korea and China. A global release is likely in 2026, possibly accompanied by a second-generation variant that refines the design even further.
A Transformative Step in Foldable Devices
Samsung first hinted at a tri-fold concept during the Galaxy Unpacked event in January, sparking speculation that it could debut alongside the Z Fold 7. Now, with the official announcement and a rough timeline set, Samsung seems poised to redefine mobile design once again. If successful, the tri-fold could pave the way for new form factors in future Galaxy offerings, as the company continues to merge flexible technology with its expansive AI initiatives.
