Spotify’s Loud & Clear 2025 Report: Transforming the Indian Music Scene

Spotify has unveiled its latest Loud & Clear 2025 report, shedding light on how the streaming economy continues to impact the global music industry, especially enhancing India’s artist economy. With Spotify marking six years of service in India, the platform’s influence on local musicians has been profoundly transformative.

The report reveals that Spotify’s initiatives are enabling Indian artists to access international markets, with nearly 50% of the royalties earned by Indian artists in 2024 coming from listeners outside the country. This figure signifies a notable rise from the 40% recorded the previous year. The most lucrative markets beyond India include the United States, United Kingdom, UAE, Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.

Spotify has emerged as a vital source of income for Indian musicians. The count of artists making over INR 50 lakh annually via Spotify has more than doubled since 2022. Even more remarkable is the fact that the number of musicians achieving over INR 1 crore per year has tripled, while those earning more than INR 5 crore have also doubled during the same timeframe.

According to Spotify, around two-thirds of all royalties generated in India in 2024 stemmed from Indian artists. This achievement is credited to initiatives aimed at educating artists, programs for emerging talent, and diverse experiences designed to foster connections between creators and their audiences.

Local Artists Dominate Spotify’s Daily Top 50 Playlist in India

In 2024, Spotify’s daily top 50 playlist in India remains predominantly occupied by local artists, with over 90% of the tracks belonging to Indian musicians, indicating a 6% increase compared to 2023. Furthermore, more than 9,000 Indian artists were featured in global and local editorial playlists this year, an increase from the 8,700 artists included in the previous year.

Growth of Diverse Music Genres

Spotify’s influence transcends the Hindi-speaking audience, with music in Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu witnessing significant growth. For example, the global popularity of Telugu music surged by 39% year-on-year, with royalties soaring more than double since 2021.

From Hindi pop and hip-hop to Punjabi, Tamil pop, and Malayalam hip-hop, Indian music is transcending barriers and tapping into new global audiences. The success of the platform is significantly propelled by artists such as Arijit Singh, Pritam, Anirudh Ravichander, Karan Aujla, Shreya Ghoshal, Diljit Dosanjh, Hanumankind, Kalmi, A.R. Rahman, Sidhu Moose Wala, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Vishal-Shekhar, AP Dhillon, Badshah, and Alka Yagnik.

Independent Music on the Rise

Notably, over 65% of the top 30 most-exported songs in 2024 were produced outside the Indian film industry, indicating a growing trend towards independent music gaining international recognition.

On a global scale, Spotify distributed over $10 billion in music royalties in 2024, with total payouts nearing $60 billion since the company’s establishment. The ongoing efforts of Spotify to democratize the music ecosystem are yielding positive outcomes, creating an environment where both fans and creators can flourish together.
