Telegram Partners with xAI for AI Integration
Telegram has revealed a significant partnership with Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, aimed at incorporating its chatbot Grok into the messaging platform for a year. This collaboration, valued at $300 million in both cash and equity according to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, represents a major step forward for both companies in the dynamic AI space.
Access to Advanced AI Technology
This summer, Telegram users will enjoy access to leading AI technology. Pavel Durov stated that he and Elon Musk have agreed to a one-year partnership, bringing xAI’s Grok to over a billion users and seamlessly integrating it across all Telegram applications. This also bolsters Telegram’s financial positioning.
New Integrations and Features
A promotional video shared by Durov on X illustrated numerous new integrations. Users can now pin Grok to the top of their chats, initiate queries directly from the search bar, and utilise it for various tasks, including summarising chats, links, and documents, generating writing suggestions, crafting stickers, providing answers to customer inquiries, and moderating content. These features echo similar functionalities launched by Meta with its Meta AI across Instagram and WhatsApp.
Clarification on Formal Agreement
While Durov confirmed the deal, Musk commented on X that no formal agreement had yet been signed. Durov clarified that both parties reached an agreement in principle, with legal formalities still pending.
Boost to xAI and Telegram
If this partnership is finalised, it could significantly enhance xAI’s position within the AI industry and enable Telegram to further monetise its expanding platform with AI-empowered services.
Subscription Revenue and User Privacy
Under the terms of the agreement, xAI will implement Grok throughout Telegram’s platform, including its mini-app ecosystem. Telegram will receive 50% of all subscription revenue generated via the app. This deal may expose Grok to Telegram’s extensive user base, allowing xAI to gather valuable interactions for refining its AI models.
Durov stressed that xAI will only access data that users willingly share with Grok through direct interactions, aiming to mitigate data privacy concerns. In contrast to xAI’s parent company, X, which utilises public user posts for model training, it is still unclear if similar data-sharing practices will be adopted by Telegram.
