Tesla to Launch Retail Operations in India by April
Tesla is taking significant strides toward establishing retail operations in India by April. The company will begin by importing electric vehicles (EVs) from its Berlin factory, as reported by CNBC-TV18.
This US-based electric vehicle giant has secured showroom locations in two major cities: Mumbai and New Delhi, marking a crucial advancement in entering the third-largest automobile market in the world after facing extensive delays. Tesla initially postponed its plans to enter the Indian market in 2022 but has revitalized its efforts following a recent meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US.
Tesla’s Key Locations in India
Tesla has reportedly finalised two prime locations for its retail presence in India:
- New Delhi: Aerocity, a leading commercial area near Indira Gandhi International Airport, renowned for its luxury hotels, corporate offices, and retail spaces.
- Mumbai: Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a prominent business and retail district situated close to the city’s airport.
Both Tesla showrooms are expected to cover approximately 5,000 square feet. However, it has been noted that these locations will not feature service centres, highlighting the company’s initial objective to prioritize the sale of imported vehicles rather than providing after-sales services.
Affordable EV for the Indian Market
Tesla is projected to introduce an electric car priced at under $25,000 (₹21 lakh) specifically designed for the Indian consumer. Despite this, the company has yet to confirm plans for local EV manufacturing in India. Instead, Tesla aims to increase the sourcing of components from Indian OEM suppliers, with expectations that this sourcing could surpass $1 billion by 2025.
Job Openings and Recruitment Efforts
The company has also recently advertised job openings for 13 mid-level positions in India, including roles such as store managers and customer relationship executives, indicating active recruitment efforts in preparation for its official launch.
Challenges Ahead
Tesla has long advocated for the reduction of import duties on EVs in India, which currently stand at nearly 100%. This high tariff has posed a significant challenge. While Musk has consistently lobbied for reduced tariffs, Indian automotive manufacturers have expressed concern, fearing that such reductions could disrupt the local EV market.
Additionally, US President Donald Trump recently critiqued India’s elevated import tariffs on vehicles while expressing a willingness to collaborate with Modi in resolving trade issues and achieving a timely trade agreement.
Future of Tesla in India
Although the launch of Tesla’s showrooms is on the horizon, the schedule for vehicle sales remains uncertain. The company is concentrating on the sales of imported EVs whilst continuing to advocate for favourable policy reforms before considering any local manufacturing.
As the demand for electric vehicles in India rapidly grows, Tesla’s entry into the market is expected to heighten competition among existing manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Mahindra Electric, and MG Motor, all of whom are accelerating their EV production efforts.
