Apple Vision Pro Expansion Plans for Mixed Reality Headsets

Apple is making progress with its Vision Pro expansion plans, despite disappointing sales figures and a limited market presence of the initial mixed reality headset. Reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicate that the tech giant is developing two new models: a lighter, more cost-effective headset that resembles Meta’s Ray-Ban-style smart glasses, and a wired variant designed for direct connection to a Mac, aimed specifically at enterprise users.

Initial Vision Pro Launch and Reception

The original Vision Pro was unveiled in June 2023 and made available in 2024 at a price tag of $3,500. This headset introduced Apple’s vision of spatial computing but faced backlash due to its steep price and bulky design. Users reported experiencing head and neck discomfort during extended usage, with some even requesting refunds. Following substantial investments into the platform, Apple is reportedly committed to pursuing additional models.

New Lighter, Affordable Vision Pro Model

The first of the forthcoming models aims to address these concerns effectively. Gurman reveals that Apple is crafting a lighter and more affordable headset intended to appeal more broadly to consumers. This model will be more aligned in design philosophy with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, featuring a streamlined, wearable aesthetic.

Targeting a Broader Audience

Though still part of the Vision Pro series, this model is expected to significantly differ from the current heavyweight hardware, potentially drawing in users who have been priced out by the initial $3,500 device. The anticipated reduction in price presents challenges for Apple, primarily due to manufacturing expenses and possible tariff complications associated with production in China.

Wired Vision Pro Headset for Enterprise Use

The second model under development is a wired Vision Pro headset designed to connect directly to a Mac. This version is tailored for professional users in enterprise environments, focusing on delivering ultra-low latency performance. This version will maintain the current Vision Pro’s immersive, pass-through design, contrasting with an earlier, discarded concept featuring transparent lenses.

Shift in Development Strategy

Initially, Apple planned only a simple upgrade to the Vision Pro that would swap its internal M2 chip for an M5. However, due to enterprise users indicating concerns about latency in wireless scenarios, the decision to pivot to a tethered headset signifies a shift in Apple’s priorities for professional engagement.

Long-Term Vision for Augmented Reality Glasses

These advancements are part of what Gurman refers to as CEO Tim Cook’s broader vision of eventually launching lightweight augmented reality glasses suitable for all-day wear. A source familiar with the discussions highlighted Cook’s unwavering focus, indicating, “Tim cares about nothing else… it’s the only thing he’s really spending his time on from a product development standpoint.”
