TikTok’s New App Version for US Users
TikTok is currently developing a new version of its app tailored specifically for users in the United States. This effort aligns with the ongoing preparations for a possible sale to a consortium of American investors, as reported by Reuters, referencing The Information.
Expected Release Date
According to the report, the updated app is anticipated to be available on US app stores by 5 September. Eventually, users will need to transition to this new version to continue accessing the platform, although the existing app is expected to remain operational until March next year. Nevertheless, Reuters indicated that this timeline may still be subject to adjustments.
Government Involvement
This development follows recent remarks from US President Donald Trump. He mentioned on Friday that discussions with China regarding a potential TikTok deal are set to commence on Monday or Tuesday. Trump suggested that the US is “pretty much” close to having an agreement concerning the future of the short-video app.
Deadline Extension for ByteDance
Last month, Trump prolonged the deadline for ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company based in China, to divest its US assets until 17 September.
Previous Negotiations
An earlier agreement to separate TikTok’s US operations into a newly formed American-owned entity was underway but was paused after China displayed opposition to US tariff measures. Trump acknowledged that any final deal would likely necessitate approval from Beijing.
Company Response
TikTok has yet to respond to Reuters’ request for comments, and the agency stated that it could not independently confirm The Information’s report.
