Pixel 9a: The Affordable Alternative to Pixel 9 Series
Google has a history of not keeping its new launches under wraps, and the Pixel 9a appears to be no different. The Pixel 9a, which offers a budget-friendly option in the Pixel 9 lineup, has once again been the subject of leaks that reveal insights about its design, features, and available colours, as reported by the German outlet WinFuture.
Design and Display
The Pixel 9a is anticipated to showcase a significant design overhaul, moving away from the previous models’ visor-style camera setup. Instead, it will present a streamlined rear camera unit, aligning it more closely with the high-end Pixel 9 series. Reports suggest that the device is marginally larger than the Pixel 8a, likely allowing for a more expansive 6.3-inch display.
Available in four vibrant colours: Iris (Blue), Obsidian (Black), Peony (Pink), and Porcelain (White), the Pixel 9a’s palette echoes that of the Pixel 9 series. Additionally, this model is expected to come with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, enhancing its durability compared to former A-series iterations.
Google is also thought to enhance the materials used in the construction of the Pixel 9a, replacing the plastic back found in the Pixel 8a with a glass rear and a metal frame, thereby imparting a more premium aesthetic.
The 6.3-inch OLED display will feature a refresh rate of 120Hz, greater brightness levels of 1,800 nits, and an impressive peak brightness of 2,700 nits, aimed at improving outdoor visibility as well as HDR10+ content performance. This upgrade would represent a noteworthy improvement over the previous model.
Performance and Software
At its heart, the Pixel 9a will be equipped with Google’s Tensor G4 SoC, the same processor that powers the flagship Pixel 9. However, it is likely that Google will intentionally reduce the processing power of this chipset to differentiate it from the Pixel 9. The device is expected to offer 8GB of RAM and provide a choice between two storage capacities: 128GB and 256GB. For enhanced security, it will include Google’s Titan M2 security chip.
Launching with Android 15, the Pixel 9a will be the first smartphone from Google to feature this latest operating system. Furthermore, it is set to benefit from seven years of software updates, supporting Google’s recent promise of long-term device support.
Camera System
Rumours indicate that the Pixel 9a will incorporate a 48MP main camera, which marks a downgrade from the 64MP sensor in the Pixel 8a. Nevertheless, typical of Google’s approach, there is an expectation for AI-driven enhancements to compensate for the reduced sensor size. The secondary 13MP ultra-wide camera will remain unchanged from the previous version.
On the front, a 13MP selfie camera is expected, likely continuing Google’s reputation for outstanding computational photography, which is expected to enhance portrait images and video calls.
Battery and Charging
A significant highlight of the Pixel 9a is anticipated to be its much larger 5,100mAh battery, making it the device with the largest battery capacity in the history of Pixel smartphones. This increase represents a 13% improvement over the 4,492mAh battery found in the Pixel 8a.
In terms of charging capabilities, these are expected to stay consistent with prior models, featuring 23W wired charging and 7.5W for wireless charging. Some leaks have suggested potential minor enhancements in wired charging efficiency, though this detail has yet to be confirmed.
Expected Pricing and Availability
The Pixel 9a is expected to retail for $499 (approximately ₹42,000 in India) for the 128GB model, maintaining the same price point as its predecessor while boasting various improvements. In Europe, the base variant is likely to begin at €499.
If the leaks hold true, Google is expected to officially unveil the Pixel 9a on March 19, with sales starting on March 26.
