vivo Vision Discovery Edition: A New Era in Mixed Reality
Chinese smartphone brand vivo has unveiled its inaugural mixed reality (MR) headset, the vivo Vision Discovery Edition, during an event in Dongguan, China, celebrating the company’s 30th anniversary.
This device marks vivo’s initial foray into the spatial computing sector, making it the first Chinese smartphone brand to venture into MR headset production. This launch showcases the company’s increasing commitment to immersive technologies, enhancing its established strengths in imaging and display systems.
Development and Design of the vivo Vision Discovery Edition
The Vision Discovery Edition has taken four years to develop. It weighs 398 grams and is crafted to be more compact than rival headsets, boasting a 26% reduction in size compared to the industry standard. Its ergonomic design includes various light seal and foam padding options for added comfort during prolonged use.
Advanced Features and Functionality
Running on OriginOS Vision, the headset supports gesture-based interaction, eliminating traditional touchscreen inputs in favour of hand and eye tracking. It incorporates 1.5-degree high-precision eye-tracking along with fingertip gesture recognition across 26 degrees of freedom. Dual Micro-OLED displays deliver 8K binocular resolution with 94% DCI-P3 colour coverage, aiming to provide visuals comparable to professional cinema monitors.
Power and Performance
The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2.1 platform, which vivo claims offers 2.5 times the GPU performance and up to eight times improved AI performance over its predecessor. This enhancement is expected to result in smoother rendering for various applications in entertainment, gaming, and productivity.
Versatile Use Cases
The headset is designed to accommodate various use cases, including panoramic video viewing, live sports streaming from multiple angles, and a virtual 120-inch cinema screen for films and other media.
The announcement coincided with updates to vivo’s imaging technology strategy and the presentation of awards for its VISION+ Mobile PhotoAwards 2025.
Hu Baishan, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of vivo, noted that the company aims to merge technological innovation with lasting user benefits, positioning this step into mixed reality within a broader initiative to explore future consumer technologies.
