WhatsApp Introduces Ads and Subscription Options in Updates Tab
WhatsApp has officially commenced the rollout of advertisements and subscription features within its Updates tab, marking a notable change in how Meta’s messaging service intends to monetise its offerings while maintaining the privacy of individual conversations.
Used by 1.5 billion individuals daily, the Updates tab includes Status posts and the recently added Channels feature. The platform now aims to implement ads within these areas, alongside a system for paid channel subscriptions and enhanced visibility for channels.
According to the company’s blog post, “We’re introducing some new features for our Updates tab to help admins, organisations, and businesses grow on WhatsApp.”
Key Changes in WhatsApp’s Updates Tab
- Ads in Status: Businesses can now promote products or services directly through WhatsApp Status, allowing users the opportunity to discover new offerings and engage in conversations with brands instantly.
- Channel Subscriptions: Users will have the option to subscribe to their favourite Channels for a monthly fee to receive exclusive updates.
- Promoted Channels: WhatsApp will recommend Channels based on user interests, aiding creators and organisations in boosting their visibility.
These updates are intended to be visible solely in the Updates tab, separate from users’ personal chats. WhatsApp has assured that messages, calls, and groups will continue to benefit from end-to-end encryption, safeguarding the platform’s fundamental privacy commitment.
To tailor the advertising experience, WhatsApp will utilise limited data such as location, language, and channel engagement. For users who have linked WhatsApp with Meta’s Accounts Center, ad preferences may be applied across platforms. Nevertheless, WhatsApp has reiterated that it will not sell or share users’ phone numbers and will not analyse personal messages or calls for advertising purposes.
