WhatsApp Introduces New Logout Feature Without Data Loss: Here’s a Guide

WhatsApp Logout Feature Under Testing

WhatsApp is currently trialing a logout feature that enables users to sign out of their primary account while keeping the app intact and safeguarding their data.

Discovered in the recent Android beta version (2.25.17.37) by AssembleDebug in collaboration with Android Authority, this new feature can be found under Settings > Account as a “Logout” option. Users will have three choices:

  • Erase all data & preferences
  • Keep all data & preferences
  • Cancel

Selecting the second option allows users to log out while retaining all chats, media files, group data, and application settings. Consequently, users can sign back in using their number and continue using WhatsApp from where they left off. Previously, those wishing to step away from WhatsApp on their main device had to either uninstall the app or delete their account, which posed a risk of data loss unless they manually backed up their chats.

This feature is presently in internal testing and may soon be available to beta testers before a broader rollout. It aims to align WhatsApp more closely with other Meta platforms such as Facebook, which already permit users to deactivate their accounts without losing data permanently.

The anticipated logout option is likely to serve users well who are aiming for a digital hiatus, resolving app issues, or switching between multiple accounts on the same device—all without jeopardising their stored data.
