WhatsApp’s New Username Feature: Enhancing User Privacy

WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a significant feature that will modify how users interact on the platform. Soon, users will have the option to create a unique username, removing the necessity of sharing phone numbers when initiating a chat. This feature, observed in the latest beta versions for iOS and currently being developed for WhatsApp Web, aims to enhance privacy while reducing the chances of spam, scams, and undesired contact.

Highlights

  • 1 A Shift Towards Anonymity
  • 2 Username Rules and Format
  • 3 User Experience and Notifications
  • 4 Web Integration and Rollout Timeline

A Shift Towards Anonymity

Historically, WhatsApp users have needed to disclose their phone number to initiate contact, raising long-term privacy issues, particularly for women and those cautious about scams. Once a number is shared, it can be misused across various apps or involved in fraudulent activities. By enabling communication through usernames, WhatsApp is proactively tackling these concerns.

The updated system will allow users to select a distinct identifier, akin to Telegram or Signal, which will take the place of their phone number in chats and group discussions. This means individuals will be able to message others without ever needing to disclose their number, unless they opt to do so.

Username Rules and Format

To maintain consistency and security, WhatsApp has established a clear set of guidelines for usernames. Each username must:

  • Include at least one letter
  • Be between 3 and 30 characters long
  • Consist solely of lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods, and underscores
  • Avoid using domains (e.g. .com)
  • Not start or end with a period or have consecutive periods
  • Not begin with “www.”

Duplicate usernames will not be permitted, and users will be unable to choose a username that already exists in their contact list. These restrictions are implemented to lessen confusion, avert impersonation, and reduce the risk of scams.

User Experience and Notifications

Once a user selects a valid and available username, WhatsApp will celebrate the choice with a confetti animation. The username will then appear in both private and group conversations, replacing the user’s phone number. Should a user later choose to change their username, WhatsApp will automatically inform others in ongoing chats to ensure clarity and continuity.

Web Integration and Rollout Timeline

An impending update to WhatsApp Web will enable users to verify the availability of usernames and set one up prior to the full feature being launched. While the username system is not yet accessible to all beta testers, the ongoing backend development points to a public release in the near future.
