WhatsApp is set to end its support for iPhones operating on iOS 15.1 or earlier starting May 2025. This change indicates a notable transition from the existing support policy, which currently accommodates iPhones running iOS 12 and above. As a result, several older models, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp.
This decision is primarily driven by escalating security concerns. Apple has stopped providing software updates for these older versions of iOS, which makes them increasingly susceptible to potential threats. Without regular security updates, older devices become prime targets for breaches, leading WhatsApp to emphasise the importance of upgrading to newer models and software versions to ensure user safety.
The shift also signifies WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing privacy and security across its platform. Recent feature updates focus on protecting user data, introducing an improved privacy layer that restricts others from copying text, images, or videos from chats and groups, along with enhancements to tools such as chat lock. Improvements to disappearing messages provide users with better control over their message visibility.
Nevertheless, many of these improved features require state-of-the-art hardware to perform efficiently. Devices that lack biometric sensors or sufficient processing capacity may face challenges in supporting them effectively.
As iOS 15 is already viewed as three generations behind the latest version, users who continue to operate older iPhones may increasingly struggle to meet the technical requirements of current applications. WhatsApp advises upgrading to newer models to maintain access to the latest features and security updates.
