WhatsApp Introduces Advanced Chat Privacy for Enhanced User Security
Meta-owned WhatsApp has launched a new feature called Advanced Chat Privacy, aimed at improving the protection of users’ most sensitive conversations. This update, which is currently being rolled out globally, seeks to prevent chats from being exported, utilised for AI features, or having their media auto-downloaded, thus adding another layer of security to the platform’s existing end-to-end encryption.
The company mentioned in a blog post that this new setting “helps prevent others from taking content outside of WhatsApp for when you may want extra privacy.”
Features of Advanced Chat Privacy
Once this feature is activated for a particular chat or group, Advanced Chat Privacy restricts participants from exporting messages, auto-saving media to their devices, or using those messages in external AI applications. WhatsApp’s intention is to give users greater control, especially in groups where not all members are well-acquainted.
Target Audience for the New Feature
Although WhatsApp already has features like disappearing messages and chat locks, this new setting targets semi-public or issue-based groups, such as health support forums or community organising collectives. These settings are tailored for conversations that are private, but where members may not personally know each other.
The company noted, “We think this feature is best used when talking with groups where you may not know everyone closely but are nevertheless sensitive in nature.”
How to Activate Advanced Chat Privacy
Users wishing to enable this feature can do so by tapping on the chat name and selecting Advanced Chat Privacy. Once activated, these restrictions automatically apply to all participants in the conversation.
Future Enhancements
This is just the initial version of the feature, and WhatsApp has confirmed plans to enhance Advanced Chat Privacy with further protections in the future. The rollout is currently in progress for all users who have the latest version of the application.
