YouTube has officially introduced its likeness-detection technology for creators within the YouTube Partner Program after completing a successful pilot phase. This innovative tool empowers qualified creators to identify and request the removal of AI-generated videos that replicate their appearance or voice without their approval.
A representative from YouTube mentioned that this marks the initial phase of a global rollout, and creators received notification emails on Tuesday morning. The technology is designed to safeguard creators from misuse of their likeness in content that might falsely endorse products, disseminate misinformation, or damage their reputations.
This initiative follows several notable instances of unauthorised AI usage, including a situation involving the electronics company Elecrow, which utilised an AI-generated version of YouTuber Jeff Geerling’s voice to market its products.
On YouTube’s Creator Insider channel, the functionality of the tool was detailed. Initially, creators can navigate to the new “Likeness” tab, accept the data processing terms, and scan a QR code with their smartphone. This code directs them to an identity verification page where they are required to submit a photo ID and a brief selfie video.
Once the verification process is complete, creators are granted access to a dashboard showcasing all detected videos containing their likeness. From this dashboard, they can initiate a removal request according to YouTube’s privacy guidelines, submit a copyright complaint, or opt to archive the video for their records.
Creators maintain complete authority over their participation in the programme. Those who choose to withdraw from it will have their data scanning ceased within 24 hours.
YouTube began experimenting with this technology earlier in 2025, collaborating with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to help celebrities, athletes, and influencers recognise deepfake content on the platform.
In April, YouTube also expressed support for the proposed NO FAKES Act, a legislative effort aimed at reducing the creation and dissemination of deceptive AI-generated replicas that mimic individuals for harmful or misleading purposes.
